m57 - the ring nebula, probably 2,300 light years distant. We are looking down a tunnel of gas ejected from a central star that probably exploded in this way a few thousand years ago. The central star is visible in larger telescopes, what you think you can see in the image above is a star that is in the line of sight of M57 and not the actual star that is dying.
